Gender Agreement in L3 Spanish Production among Speakers of Typologically Different Languages

چکیده
Grammatical gender presents persistent difficulty for adult learners of Spanish in L2 acquisition; however, there is a literature gap L3 acquisition gender, specifically typologically different languages. In this project, we investigate the agreement by Russian (L1)/Mandarin (L1)-English (L2) speakers (L3) and compare findings with English(L1) (L2). Studying these languages particularly interesting because some exhibit an explicit system (Spanish Russian) while others do not (English Mandarin). order to examine effect L1/L2 influence on acquisition, 55 participants completed two tasks: picture identification task grammaticality judgement task. Results indicate that advanced all L1 backgrounds performed at or near ceiling. All beginner better canonically marked masculine nouns than noncanonical feminine nouns, thus corroborating previous findings. Regarding influence, outperformed other groups, especially Task 1 (Picture Identification), thereby indicating they may be transferring degree grammatical their L1. Overall, research provides evidence multiple factors, including structural typology proficiency level, play role acquisition.

The effect of stress on English word recognition by native speakers of typologically different languages
The study investigates the effect of stress on English word recognition by speakers of lexical tone and lexical pitch accent languages. Two on-line tasks that involved Taiwan Mandarin and Japanese speakers as test subjects and English natives as controls were conducted: (i) a uni-modal lexical decision task and (ii) a cross-modal priming and lexical decision task. It was found that Mandarin and...
متن کاملAutomatic evaluation of syntactic learners in typologically-different languages
Human syntax acquisition involves a system that can learn constraints on possible word sequences in typologically-different human languages. Evaluation of computational syntax acquisition systems typically involves theory-specific or language-specific assumptions that make it difficult to compare results in multiple languages. To address this problem, a bag-of-words incremental generation (BIG)...
متن کاملGender agreement on adverbs in Spanish
In this article we explore the exceptional gender agreement of the Spanish adverb mucho (‘much’), when it modifies comparative adjectives inside DPs that contain a particular type of noun (as in muchafem mejor intenciónfem, ‘much better intention’). This phenomenon, which we describe in detail, raises crucial questions both about the mechanisms of agreement and about the nature of gender in a l...
متن کاملElectrophysiology of subject-verb agreement mediated by speakers’ gender
An important property of speech is that it explicitly conveys features of a speaker's identity such as age or gender. This event-related potential (ERP) study examined the effects of social information provided by a speaker's gender, i.e., the conceptual representation of gender, on subject-verb agreement. Despite numerous studies on agreement, little is known about syntactic computations gener...
متن کاملGrammatical Gender and Number Agreement in Spanish: An ERP Comparison
The role of grammatical gender and number representations in syntactic processes during reading in Spanish was studied using the event-related potentials (ERPs) technique. The electroencephalogram was recorded with a dense array of 128 electrodes while Spanish speakers read word pairs (Experiment 1) or sentences (Experiment 2) in which gender or number agreement relationships were manipulated. ...
